About The Wine

The legacy of Muscadel or Muscat de Frontignan in South Africa dates back to its purported first planting in 1655, with the first Cape wine being crafted there from on 2 February 1659. The Boplaas family have been attached to the production of Muscadel since the mid-1800's, upon their settling in the Klein Karoo hamlet of Calitzdorp to tend vines & craft wines.

The Boplaas Heritage Muscats are crafted according to traditional vinification methods, only in exceptional vintages from select low-yielding vineyard sites and destined for decades of careful cellaring to showcase the wonder of fully mature fortified Muscat. These wines are testament to winemaking Heritage and to the grape which started it all.

Crafted from a patch of vines planted in 1979 by Boplaas patriarch Oupa Danie Nel, the Boplaas Heritage White Muscadel 2013 perfectly reflects the character of the gnarled low-yield Calitzdorp vines from which it is borne. The hand-harvested fruit was crushed, allowed three days of skin contact in lagar with periodic punch-downs to extract optimal fruit expression, a brief natural ferment was halted by fortification on the skins & the wine matured sur lie prior to bottling. A mere 3300 bottle crafted this is truly a rare, fine Calitzdorp old vine Muscat.

Intense citrus, candied pineapple, ginger, honeysuckle and plump apricot greets the taster, while the palate is full and lengthy, yet lifted by bright acidity and rounded off with vibrant spice notes.
